Teaching Philosophy

Eye-opening Moments

My teaching philosophy serves as my guiding compass on the educational journey

"The More You Know, The More You Can See"

This sentence is featured on the first slide for my Consumer Behavior class (see Figure 1.) For me, the eye-opening moment occurred when I began to realize that my daily consumption and behaviors, as well as social phenomena, could be explained by consumer behavior theories. It all began to make sense through the "lens" of consumer (or human) behavior theories. I was fascinated with consumer research and this course was not just an academic exercise; it was an eye-opening moment. I deeply realized that our knowledge shapes how we see the world, opening new ways to interpret it.

This experience sparked a passion for real learning, showing me the power of teaching to change how people view the world around them. It was a personal journey of understanding the world around me that I now wish to share with my students. I took the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses in Buyer Behavior and Digital Marketing during my time at the University of South Florida. I believe that true education, particularly in the field of marketing, extends far beyond simple knowledge transfer. My teaching and mentoring philosophy is based on this belief, emphasizing hands-on learning that bridges theoretical knowledge with real-world application. Overall, my teaching philosophy revolves around these principles: experiential learning, emotional connection, and an inclusive environment.

Real-world Applications: Experiential Learning

I believe that effective learning in marketing extends beyond the classroom. I emphasize experiential learning to effectively bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and its real-world application, particularly in the field of marketing. I integrated various activities that foster deeper engagement and knowledge internalization. For example, I’ve innovatively incorporated a Marketing Application Exercise into my weekly curriculum, as well as a comprehensive semester-long Digital Marketing Audit assignment (see the Narrative). In these exercises, students are given the opportunity to immediately apply the theories and concepts discussed in each week’s class to real-world marketing scenarios, culminating in a short paper (1-2 pages). This approach not only facilitates the development of essential skills, including analytical reasoning, critical thinking, and creativity but also nurtures a marketer’s mindset, enabling students to devise innovative solutions to real problems. Feedback from students has highlighted the positive impact of this method on their learning (see Feedback), illustrating how such immersive experiences enhance their understanding and application of marketing principles.

Emotional Connection: Beyond Knowledge Transfer

My teaching philosophy also places significant emphasis on cultivating emotional connections with students, going beyond mere knowledge transfer. Influenced by my educational background in Korea, I focus on building effective relationships with students from diverse backgrounds, fostering understanding, and exchanging world views. I see my role as a lifetime mentor, offering not just academic insights but also life lessons and guidance through open, honest communication. To enhance student engagement and positivity, I utilize various online teaching tools, including class gaming applications and the Flipgrid video app for personal introductions and rapport building. This foundation helps me guide students in shaping their future careers beyond classroom learning. It includes supporting students in furthering their studies or pursuing relevant careers, facilitating internship opportunities, and providing mentorship and practical advice for their future endeavors. Additionally, I enhance real learning by inviting guest speakers from various marketing fields, like content digital marketing and social media management.

Joy, Engagement, and Inclusivity in Learning

I strive to ignite creativity and joy in learning while promoting an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated. This approach not only stimulates intellectual growth but also emotional enrichment, encouraging students to explore, innovate, and express themselves. Embracing technology is also a key aspect of my approach, employing multimedia resources, interactive quizzes, and collaborative platforms to cater to diverse learning styles. Tools like Kahoot, Poll Everywhere, and Google Workspace are used to foster interactive learning, enhance collaboration, and build a community beyond the classroom. This multifaceted approach not only makes learning dynamic and accessible but also develops essential skills like teamwork and problem-solving, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive educational experience.

As an educator, my primary goal is to empower students to become independent and successful marketing professionals, emphasizing learning that transcends traditional classroom boundaries. I hope I can continually engage and inspire students, helping them achieve their own goals and succeed in both their studies and future careers, guided by my teaching philosophy.
